According to the research firm, Microsoft’s brand is worth $76.3 billion for 2010 – the same amount it was worth in 2009. That put it below Google, IBM and Apple, which ranked first, second and third, respectively.
Millward Brown said it was Google’s dominance in the search market, plus the popularity of Gmail and the growing popularity of Android, that increased the company’s brand value by 14 percent and pushed it to No. 1. IBM’s “A Smarter Planet” marketing campaign helped push the brand up 30 percent to second place, while Apple’s continued agility – transforming from a computer company to a broader consumer electronics company – pushed its value up 32 percent and into the third spot.
“The launch of Windows 7, accompanied by an extensive ad campaign late last year, helped Microsoft maintain its leadership position,” the report (PDF)states.
